Cry me a river

Mandy Patinkin cries for Gaza's children | WATCH

For a man of Patinkin’s stature, his one-sided sermon isn’t just disappointing, it’s nauseating.

Mandy Patinkin, once celebrated for his stirring performances and heartfelt advocacy, has taken a disheartening turn into the quagmire of selective outrage.

In a recent Instagram post, the acclaimed actor waded into the Israel-Palestine conflict with a call for a ceasefire in Gaza, lamenting the humanitarian crisis and urging donations to aid organizations like the International Rescue Committee.

While his plea for compassion may resonate with some, it’s impossible to ignore the glaring omission in his words: not a single mention of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led massacre that killed over 1,200 Israelis, nor the hostages still languishing in Hamas’s tunnels.

Patinkin’s post paints a vivid picture of Gaza’s suffering: famine looming, children starving, aid trickling in like a “drop in the ocean.” He calls for a ceasefire as the “only way” to release hostages and deliver aid.

But where is the moral outrage for the Israeli families torn apart on October 7? Where is the condemnation of Hamas, the terrorist organization that orchestrated the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust, raping, mutilating, and burning their way through southern Israel?

Patinkin’s call to donate to organizations like the IRC is (possibly) laudable on its face. But his failure to address the broader picture raises questions about his sincerity.

Does he not know that Hamas has a long history of diverting aid to build tunnels, rockets, and weapons, exacerbating the very suffering he decries? Does he not realize that Israel, too, has faced relentless attacks, with its citizens living under the constant threat of rocket fire?

What makes Patinkin’s statement particularly galling is his platform. As a beloved figure, known for roles that embody moral clarity and emotional depth, his words carry weight.

Fans who once admired his nuanced performances now see a man who seems to have traded complexity for a simplistic, trendy cause. The Jewish community, in particular, feels this sting acutely. Patinkin, a Jewish actor with deep ties to his heritage, could have used his voice to bridge divides, to call for peace while honoring the pain of all victims. Instead, he’s chosen a path of selective activism that alienates those who once saw him as someone to admire.

If he truly believes in a ceasefire, why not call out Hamas’s refusal to release the hostages? Why not demand accountability from a group that embeds itself among civilians, using them as shields while launching attacks?

Mandy Patinkin’s talent as an actor is unquestionable, but his foray into geopolitics is a masterclass in moral myopia. The world needs voices that speak truth to all sides, not ones that drink the Kool-Aid of selective outrage.

Until Patinkin finds the courage to address the full scope of this tragedy, October 7, the hostages, and all, his words will remain a hollow echo, drowned out by the cries of those he chose to ignore.
