The Military Police has been forced to postpone a major enforcement operation that was scheduled to take place this week, following urgent requests from senior Israel Police officials who cited overwhelming operational pressures stemming from the expanding conflict with Lebanon.

According to information obtained by Kikar Hashabbat, the operation was designed as a large-scale, coordinated effort involving simultaneous raids on dozens of residences across the Gush Dan metropolitan area. The targets included addresses in Tel Aviv, Givatayim, and Ramat Gan, where individuals classified as draft evaders with outstanding arrest warrants reside.

Military Police officials had characterized the planned operation as a critical 'test run' for future enforcement campaigns, with the goal of executing a high volume of arrests simultaneously to maximize impact and efficiency.

Operational Overload Cited

On Sunday evening, high-level discussions took place between senior commanders from Israel Police and Military Police leadership. During these conversations, Israel Police representatives formally requested that the planned enforcement operation be delayed.

The request was grounded in what officials described as severe operational strain across multiple fronts. Israel Police emphasized that current security realities have created unprecedented demands on their resources, including the escalating rocket fire from Lebanon targeting northern communities, ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in Arab communities, and routine law enforcement responsibilities.

"The expanding range of threats from the north, combined with the need to maintain public safety across all sectors, has created operational burdens that cannot be ignored," a source familiar with the discussions stated.

Attorney General Announces Formal Agreement

The postponement comes just one day after Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara announced that a formal agreement had been reached between the IDF and Israel Police regarding proactive enforcement operations against draft evaders. The announcement followed the fourteenth follow-up discussion on implementing Supreme Court rulings related to yeshiva student conscription.

In a document released by the Attorney General's office, officials noted that due to the need to preserve the element of surprise and ensure operational effectiveness, the specific operational plan would remain classified. The state indicated it would present details to the Supreme Court in a closed, ex parte session.

The agreement marked a significant escalation in enforcement efforts, with authorities committing to what was described as 'significant and proactive' operations in the near term. However, the operational realities on the ground have now forced a recalibration of the timeline.

Tensions in the Community

The planned operation occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions within the Haredi community. Recent weeks have witnessed a series of arrests that sparked mass protests organized by the Peleg Yerushalmi faction, with thousands taking to the streets in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak.

The Rishon LeTzion, HaGaon Rabbi David Yosef, recently addressed the situation during his weekly shiur, stating that yeshiva students are being arrested and humiliated, and that the honor of Torah is being degraded. Yeshiva administrators have begun issuing warnings to students, advising them to avoid contact with police officers, including those operating in civilian clothing.

The postponement of this week's planned operation provides a temporary reprieve, though military and law enforcement officials have made clear that enforcement efforts will continue once operational conditions permit. The question now is when, not if, such operations will proceed.
