From Stabbings to Robbery: Exposing the Brutality of the SSQ
The "Shapira Squad" gang, once considered a group of neighborhood vandals, has evolved into a dangerous criminal organization, utilizing firearms and organized violence to terrorize Tel Aviv.

What began as minor graffiti and petty vandalism in the Shapira neighborhood has metastasized into one of the most pressing threats to personal security on the streets of Tel Aviv. The gang known as "Shapira Squad" or SSQ is no longer just a collection of marginalized youth, but has developed into an organized criminal entity. A comprehensive investigation has revealed a disturbing evolution of this group, which has transitioned from breaking car windows to committing violent assaults, armed robberies, and organized criminal activities that are now spilling over into the northern parts of the city.
The origins of the SSQ can be traced back nearly a decade to a generation of youth who grew up without formal status or consistent guidance. Finding a sense of belonging within the gang structure, hundreds of minors between the ages of 9 and 18 have become involved in its operations. The gang’s criminal profile shifted significantly when established crime organizations identified the potential of these uninhibited youths, recruiting them as a violent execution arm. Police have intercepted members carrying firearms, bulletproof vests, and stun grenades, including during a thwarted assassination attempt in the northern neighborhood of Maoz Aviv.
The gang's activities have become increasingly brazen. They have been responsible for stabbing a tourist on Rothschild Boulevard, orchestrating attacks at the Azrieli Center, and assaulting teenagers in the Old North of Tel Aviv. Adding to the concern is their use of social media, particularly TikTok, where they openly mock the authorities and showcase their criminal exploits as if they were a professional portfolio. Their sense of impunity is reinforced by the belief that even when arrested, they will be released back onto the streets quickly.
One of the most disturbing incidents involved a retaliatory attack against a 12-year-old girl, whose family had the courage to report the theft of a smartphone to the police. This brutal assault, captured on video, has left the public with a profound sense of helplessness. The state of lawlessness is now impacting the demographic makeup of the city, as families, terrified for the safety of their children, are increasingly choosing to move elsewhere. This exodus of residents highlights the failure of the current enforcement approach, as the SSQ continues to operate with a degree of violence that has fundamentally altered the sense of safety in the urban center.
