Ex-intel chief: I'll vote for Netanyahu

Col. (res.) Ronen Cohen, who headed IDF Intelligence research division, says PM took us to a strategic position no one dreamed of despite years of opposing him

A former senior IDF Intelligence officer has announced he will vote for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the next election, despite never having supported him in the past.

Col. (res.) Ronen Cohen, who served as head of the research division in IDF Intelligence (Aman), told Galei Israel radio this morning that he has changed his position on the prime minister following his conduct during the war.

"I want to say something about Netanyahu. I was not among his supporters over the years," Cohen explained in an interview on Avi Ratzon's program. "Not because of trial matters and cigars and nonsense, because I hold a security worldview of the right that is considered 'extreme.' I don't see it as extreme, I believe in Greater Israel, in settlement, in the land, and in not surrendering to our enemies."

Cohen described the prime minister's handling of the war and his decision to change his voting pattern: "Starting from October 7th, this man, despite his age, despite everything, rose like a phoenix and saved the State of Israel. As he told Biden: by the fingernails. It was by the fingernails against everyone, against the Americans for a very long period, with an embargo, with lack of ammunition for our fighters to fight in Gaza already two weeks later, against those who undermined him like Hertzi and Ronen Bar, and against the legal system."

The former research division chief concluded his remarks with praise for the achievement of Israel's strategic goals: "This man woke up and simply took us to places where there is no person in Israel who can pinch himself and dream we would reach such a strategic position. For the first time in my life, I will vote for him."
