Gary Lineker's Comeback May Surprise You
Fired Over a Tweet? BBC 'Legend’s' Shocking Exit and His Billion-Pound Backup Plan
A prominent British sports broadcaster parts ways with a major network following public backlash over a controversial social media post. As he steps away from television, he sets his sights on a booming new venture already showing signs of success.

Less than 24 hours after the BBC confirmed that Gary Lineker would be parting ways with the network earlier than expected, the former football star has revealed his next steps. The decision follows public outrage over a controversial social media post that many interpreted as anti-Semitic. Though Lineker issued an unequivocal apology, the backlash, compounded by his history of politically charged statements ultimately led the BBC to sever ties with the veteran broadcaster.
Lineker, 64, who rose to fame as a footballer with Leicester City, Tottenham, and Barcelona, had been a central figure in BBC Sport for over two decades, hosting the flagship program Match of the Day. While he had previously announced his intention to step back from the Premier League coverage after this season, he was still expected to cover the FA Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, those plans have now been cancelled.
The BBC confirmed that Lineker’s departure was not his own decision, and according to a Daily Mail report, he will not receive any financial compensation. His resignation was reportedly agreed upon following internal discussions, given the mounting criticism over a social media post that many found deeply offensive. The post sparked accusations of antisemitism and reignited memories of previous controversies, such as Lineker’s comparison of the UK’s asylum policy to 1930s Germany.
In a formal apology, Lineker stated, “I want to say again that I am deeply sorry for the hurt and distress I caused. It was a sincere mistake that I should not have made. I have always stood against racism and in defense of minorities, and I utterly abhor antisemitism. There is no place for it, and there never should be.”
Despite the professional setback, Lineker has quickly pivoted to a new opportunity: podcasting. He is one of the founders of Goalhanger, a podcast production company behind several of the UK’s most popular shows, including The Rest is Football (which he co-hosts with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards), The Rest is Politics, and The Rest is Entertainment. Goalhanger has experienced massive success, producing six of the top 20 most-listened-to podcasts in the UK according to Spotify, with profits rising by £1.4 million over the past year.
Speaking about his future, Lineker said, “I think I’ll be focusing more on the podcasting world now, which is something I genuinely enjoy.” The podcasting industry appears ready to welcome him with open arms, offering both creative freedom and a lucrative business opportunity.
BBC Director-General Tim Davie acknowledged Lineker’s contribution, stating: “Gary has been a central voice in our football coverage for more than two decades. His passion and insight have shaped sports journalism and earned him admiration from fans across the UK and beyond. We thank him for his invaluable service.”
Lineker’s departure marks the end of a broadcasting era at the BBC, but the beginning of a new chapter in digital media for one of football’s most recognizable figures.
