A peculiar trend gaining renewed momentum on social media platforms has young men taking facial grooming to an extreme: trimming or shaving their eyelashes in an attempt to give their eyes a more "masculine" and rugged appearance. Medical professionals, however, are sounding the alarm that beyond aesthetic considerations, this practice poses genuine risks to eye health.
Videos circulating online show young men shortening their eyelashes using electric trimmers or cutting implements, sometimes performing the procedure themselves and other times visiting barbers. The reasoning behind the phenomenon is that long, prominent eyelashes are perceived by some participants as a feminine trait, while shorter lashes supposedly create a sharper, more masculine look.
But eyelashes serve a purpose far beyond cosmetic appeal. They form part of the eye's natural defense system, helping to keep dust and particles away from the eye and triggering the blink reflex when objects approach too closely.
Experts caution that trimming them can temporarily compromise this protective function. Additionally, using scissors or electric trimmers in such close proximity to the eye carries risks of injury, irritation, inflammation, or infection.
Despite these warnings, the videos continue to attract attention and spark debate online about how far young people are willing to go in pursuit of a "masculine" appearance—in this case, right to the edge of the lash line.
