A 27-year-old man in St. Paul, Minnesota, saved 19 schoolchildren on Monday after he spotted their bus rolling down the street with its doors open and no one at the wheel.
Abubakar Ahmed was on the street when he saw the bus moving without control. Looking inside, he realized the driver had collapsed and was suffering what appeared to be a medical emergency.
Ahmed did not hesitate. He ran after the moving bus, jumped through the open door, and tried to bring it to a stop. He said he accidentally shifted the bus into reverse at first, but quickly corrected himself, put it in neutral, and pulled the parking brake. The bus came to a halt.
"I saw the driver going through a medical episode and I felt it was my duty," Ahmed told local reporters afterward. "These are kids. Even if I had died, it still would have been worth it."
Some of the children screamed and cried during the incident, he said, while others tried to call for help.
Local school officials said none of the students were injured. They were transferred to another bus and continued to their destination. The driver was taken for medical treatment and later released to his home.
