US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke Thursday evening with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Foreign Ministry in Doha announced. The call comes against the backdrop of rising tensions between Washington and Tehran and fears of a potential American strike on Iran.

According to the Qatari statement, the two leaders "discussed the close strategic partnership and cooperation between Qatar and the United States, as well as ways to support and strengthen it." Rubio and Al Thani also "reviewed recent regional developments, with an emphasis on diplomatic efforts and joint coordination to reduce escalation and strengthen security and stability in the region," the statement said.

During the conversation, Al Thani "affirmed Qatar's support for all diplomatic efforts and initiatives aimed at a solution that ensures freedom of maritime navigation and paves the way for a comprehensive agreement that will bring lasting peace to the region," according to the Qatari readout.
