i24 host Eliraz Sadeh said Sunday that if Shas were to join a left-wing government led by Gadi Eisenkot, "it will probably be the end of the party. As for the Ashkenazi chareidim, the voting for them will continue."
Today, Shas is automatically aligned with the right-wing bloc, both because of party chairman Aryeh Deri's loyalty to Prime Minister Netanyahu and because of the rightward shift among younger chareidi voters, who increasingly identify with the right.
Deri himself is not by nature a committed right-winger, not on security and certainly not on economics, but he understands the mood in his party.
Meanwhile, people in Eisenkot's circle who are discussing a minority government have emphasised that such a thing could happen with United Torah Judaism, not with Shas.
