Shas chairman Aryeh Deri informed associates on Thursday that he intends to resign from party leadership in the wake of the election results.

"I intend to resign from party leadership following the failure in the elections," Deri told those close to him.

During the day, the Rishon LeTzion HaGaon Rav David Yosef shlita and members of Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah, HaGaon Rav Salim, HaGaon Rav Shmuel Betzalel and HaGaon Rav Yehuda Cohen, went to Deri's home in an attempt to convince him to reverse his decision.

"I am tired of leading the movement. I no longer have the strength, this is no longer for me. I was already thinking of resigning before the elections, and now the decision has become stronger for me," Deri told the rabbanim.
