A violent incident in Crown Heights early Friday morning has raised concerns about street safety in Brooklyn's Jewish neighborhoods. Around 2:30 a.m., Shomrim, a volunteer community patrol, received reports of a man harassing a yeshiva student near Eastern Parkway and Albany Avenue.
According to reports, the suspect followed the student, blocked his path while verbally abusing him, and pursued him down the street in a threatening manner. Bystanders intervened, positioning themselves between the attacker and the student to protect him.
The suspect then attacked the bystanders, threatening them and slashing one with a sharpened beverage can. The victim sustained injuries that required medical attention but were not life-threatening.
Shomrim volunteers arrived within minutes. When the suspect saw them and heard sirens approaching, he fled. Shomrim and NYPD officers pursued him and apprehended him near President Street and Albany Avenue. He was taken into custody for investigation.
