An 8-year-old girl has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in Pomona, a town near Monsey, New York.
Sheindel Herzberg, daughter of Rabbi Yudi and Chuma Herzberg, was riding her bicycle on Thippen Lane in Pomona Tuesday evening when a passing car struck her. Witnesses immediately called emergency services, and within minutes dozens of Hatzalah Rockland volunteers arrived alongside paramedics and emergency medical teams.
Responders found the girl unconscious and suffering from severe multi-system trauma that had sent her into traumatic cardiac arrest. Advanced resuscitation efforts were performed on-scene before she was rushed to Nyack Hospital, where doctors and hospital staff fought for her life for hours in the trauma room.
Despite the sustained efforts of medical teams, she was pronounced dead near midnight. The Haredi community in the area held urgent prayer gatherings throughout the night for her recovery.
Following the news of her death, volunteers from the organizations Misaskin, Chesed Shel Emet, and Chaveirim of Rockland County arrived to coordinate with local authorities and ensure proper handling in accordance with Jewish law.
Her funeral is scheduled for Wednesday morning in the United States, and she will be laid to rest at Monsey Bais Hachaim cemetery on Brick Church Road.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
