The Torah and Chassidic world is mourning the passing of Rabbi Eliezer Avraham Etzioni Z”L, a prominent public figure, legal professional, and dedicated servant of the Jewish educational world, who passed away this morning at the age of 63 following a prolonged and difficult illness.

Rabbi Etzioni was a multifaceted figure who balanced a professional career in law with a life completely dedicated to Torah study and communal leadership. He was widely respected as the Secretary General of Vaad HaYeshivos (the Committee of Yeshivas) and served as the Chairman of the New Seminar in Tel Aviv.

A Life of Torah and Service

Born in 1962 to the renowned diamond merchant and philanthropist Rabbi Uziel Etzioni, Eliezer Avraham grew up in the heart of Bnei Brak. In his youth, he studied at the prestigious Kol Torah and Ponevezh yeshivas, where he formed deep bonds with the leading Torah sages of the generation.

Throughout his adult life, he was known as a Bar Oryan (a scholar), adhering to the principle of making "Torah his primary occupation and his work secondary." Even while managing complex public affairs, he remained a fixture of the daily study sessions and prayers at the Mohilever Synagogue in Bnei Brak.

Pillar of the Sadigura Chassidus

A central pillar of Rabbi Etzioni’s life was his profound connection to the Sadigura Chassidic dynasty. He was a devoted follower of the previous Rebbes and maintained a close, soul-bound relationship with the current Rebbe.

Witnesses recall that just this past Friday, the Sadigura Rebbe paid a special visit to Rabbi Etzioni’s bedside. In a poignant moment a few weeks prior, the Rebbe shared a conversation he had with Rabbi Etzioni regarding the challenges of modern education. Rabbi Etzioni had remarked that experience had proven there is no "middle ground" between a Torah lifestyle and worldly "openness," only a steadfast commitment to authentic Jewish education ensures the continuity of the generations.

Legacy

Rabbi Etzioni is survived by a large, distinguished family of children and grandchildren following in his path of Torah and Chesed (loving-kindness).

The funeral procession is expected to draw many from the rabbinical and public leadership sectors to pay their final respects to a man who spent his life fortifying the walls of the yeshiva world.
