Prominent South African Jewish Intellectual Killed in "Express Kidnapping"
Authorities have arrested five suspects following the kidnapping and murder of Steven Gruzd, a leading South African intellectual. Officials state the motive was criminal, not antisemitic.

Steven Gruzd, a highly respected South African Jewish intellectual and program head at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), was found dead on Friday following what authorities are describing as an "express kidnapping" for the purposes of ransom and theft.
According to the Jewish Community Security Organization (CSO), Gruzd disappeared at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27. His family immediately alerted both the CSO and Community Active Protection (CAP), who worked to track the abduction.
Following a search, police discovered Gruzd’s body two days later. The breakthrough in the case came after South African authorities arrested five individuals in connection with the crime; one of the suspects reportedly led officials to the location of the victim’s body.
Despite Gruzd’s prominent standing within the Jewish community, investigators have emphasized that the attack appears to be a target of opportunity rather than a hate crime.
At the time of his death, Gruzd served as the Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at SAIIA. The institute released a statement mourning the loss of a man known for his "brilliant mind" and "unwavering dedication" to the continent.
"Steve was known for his unwavering dedication to his work and his commitment to the policy community in Africa," the SAIIA stated. "His absence leaves a significant void at SAIIA and across the continent he served so passionately."
The South African Jewish community and the broader academic world continue to mourn a man described by colleagues as a "gentle spirit" whose life was cut short by a rising tide of violent regional crime.
