The Jewish community in the Five Towns area of Long Island, New York, is mourning the sudden death of Allison Rahmani, a 40-year-old educator and mother of four who died last Friday in a tragic accident at her Hewlett home. She lost control of her SUV, which crashed through a fence and plunged into the family's backyard swimming pool.
According to the New York Post, police investigators believe she suffered a sudden medical emergency while driving in her yard, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. Despite the medical crisis and the shock of crashing into the water, she managed to call 911 from inside the submerged car. Emergency responders arrived quickly and pulled her from the pool, immediately beginning advanced life-saving measures. Tragically, she was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital. Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing but foul play is not suspected.
Just days before the accident, she had celebrated her 40th birthday. On Sunday, the day of her funeral, she and her husband, Matthew, were scheduled to depart for a vacation in Paris. Matthew serves as president of the Irving Place Minyan, an Orthodox synagogue in the nearby Woodmere neighborhood. Instead of accompanying his wife to the airport, he found himself accompanying her to her final rest.
The funeral, held at Boulevard-Riverside Chapel in Hewlett, drew large crowds from throughout the area and featured deeply moving moments. The grieving widower delivered a tearful eulogy in which he recited Eshet Chayil over her grave, the New York Post reported. He told mourners he regretted not saying these words at their wedding, adding that no words could better capture her noble character. He recalled their early married life when they lived modestly, describing how she always believed in him, pushed him forward, and served as the steadfast pillar of their home. Through his tears, he promised to continue raising their four young children with devotion.
Rahmani's mother also eulogized her daughter, saying that the family is shattered and will never be the same.
Rahmani served as mathematics coordinator at the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR), a Jewish day school, where she was known as a dedicated and beloved teacher. Colleagues spoke of her generous heart and extraordinary care for her students. In one example, when the mother of one of her students passed away, Rahmani created a special corner in her classroom stocked with brushes and hair accessories so she could personally style the orphaned girls' hair each morning, ensuring they would look and feel like every other child.
