A political firestorm erupted Monday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a sharp public rebuke of Rabbi Dov Lando, the revered spiritual leader of the Lithuanian Haredi world, following the rabbi's controversial remarks characterizing religious Zionist soldiers as participants in what he termed "real murder."
The confrontation marks a dramatic escalation in tensions between the coalition and its Haredi partners, transforming what began as an internal religious dispute into a full-blown political crisis just as Israel heads toward possible elections.
"I firmly reject the shocking remarks made against IDF soldiers from the religious Zionist community," Netanyahu declared in an official statement released Monday afternoon. "IDF soldiers — religious, secular, and Haredi alike — leave their homes, their jobs, and their families, and risk their lives to defend the State of Israel, its citizens, and the Jewish people as a whole."
