Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, known for his pro-Israel stance and opposition to Islamist movements, is advancing comprehensive legislation that would constitutionally prohibit all forms of political Islam in the country. The proposed measure would ban the promotion of Islamist ideologies through political channels.
According to Stocker, the initiative responds to challenges stemming from Austria's European Union membership and increased Muslim immigration over the past decade, which he says threatens the country's demographic makeup. "I do not want and will not accept that my children or the nation's children grow up in a Muslim country," the chancellor stated. "We must not allow our children to be raised under political Islam."
The proposal, which has garnered broad parliamentary support, would classify political Islam and its various movements as banned ideologies under the constitution—a designation similar to that applied to Nazism. Stocker warned against inaction: "We must not allow the day to come when extremist preachers in mosques have the power to tell parliament what to do."
