Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella is facing a public backlash following a visit to Buenaventura, one of the cities hardest hit by the recent devastating earthquake. During the trip, the newly inaugurated leader was photographed distributing soccer balls emblazoned with his political movement's logos to local children.

The gesture sparked immediate controversy given the scale of the disaster. The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10 has claimed hundreds of lives, injured more than 4,000 people, and left nearly 200 still missing, according to recently published figures. Thousands of homes and critical infrastructure were damaged or destroyed across the affected regions.

As families continue to grapple with destroyed homes and damaged infrastructure, images of the president handing out branded soccer balls quickly went viral on social media, triggering sharp criticism. De la Espriella had traveled to the area as part of an official visit intended to assess the damage firsthand and review relief operations. During his time there, he met with residents and distributed the soccer balls to children—balls that prominently featured symbols and messages associated with his political campaign.

The images rapidly spread online and ignited public anger. Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro mocked the move on social media, claiming the government was treating a humanitarian crisis as if it were a soccer match. Other critics drew comparisons to previous instances where leaders were accused of turning disaster relief into photo opportunities.

In response, the president's administration emphasized that the visit encompassed far more than the distribution of soccer balls. Officials pointed to medical aid initiatives and infrastructure rehabilitation efforts presented during his time in the region, including water damage repairs and the deployment of medical services for affected residents.
