EU abandons plan to grant Canada "associated member" status after opposition from major states

The European Union is expected to drop its plan to grant Canada the status of an "associated member" following opposition from Germany, France, Italy, and Greece. Instead, a draft joint statement proposes establishing with Canada a "close and growing partnership" that does not amount to full membership in the Union. The proposal still awaits final approval.
