Ukraine's former Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov has made a striking claim about the future of warfare: women should be recruited in greater numbers for military service, particularly as drone operators.
According to Reznikov, women possess specific advantages in operating unmanned aerial vehicles, including superior peripheral vision and faster reaction times. These traits, he argues, could prove decisive in combat environments where drone operators must rapidly identify targets, track movement, and make split-second decisions.
The assertion comes as drones have become central to the war in Ukraine. Small, relatively inexpensive unmanned aircraft now serve not only for reconnaissance but also for locating enemy forces, directing artillery fire, and conducting direct attacks. Operators often sit far from the front lines, controlling their craft via screens and controllers, a setting where precision, concentration, and quick responses can mean the difference between success and failure.
However, scientific research on reaction times presents a more nuanced picture. In simple visual-motor response tests, men sometimes demonstrate faster reaction times. Similarly, claims of consistent female advantages in peripheral vision have not been conclusively proven across all scenarios.
In practice, drone operation performance depends on numerous factors: experience, training quality, concentration levels, fatigue, information processing speed, and familiarity with the system. Rather than assuming one gender holds inherent advantages, the most critical factor may simply be who has received the best training and can function effectively under pressure.
For Ukraine, now years into a war where drones have become among the most important battlefield tools, the pool of potential operators has become a strategic resource. Women already serve in various military roles throughout Ukraine's armed forces, and the discussion about integrating them into drone operations reflects the broader transformation the entire conflict has undergone.
