Germany-Russia Drone Attack: Leipzig Airport Incident

Germany has formally accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted attack using explosive drones at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, 2026. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul presented findings from police and intelligence investigations in Berlin, pointing to direct Russian involvement in the planned operation.

According to German authorities, the primary target was Ukrainian cargo aircraft parked at the airport. Investigators identified at least three drones involved in the incident: one carrying explosives was discovered in the secure area near the planes, though the explosive payload failed to detonate due to a malfunction in the triggering mechanism. A second drone collided with a DHL cargo plane during takeoff that same night, causing minor damage. A third drone was found on August 14 in an open area near the airport.

Interior Minister Dobrindt stated that "Germany is a daily target of hybrid warfare," adding that the incident fits "a familiar pattern of Russia's hybrid operations in Europe." Foreign Minister Wadephul noted that Russia's ambassador was summoned for a reprimand at the Foreign Ministry, emphasizing the severity of the incident.

In response, Germany announced a series of measures: closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn effective September 18, 2026; evacuation of the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin; enhanced security screening for Russian citizens entering the country; increased pressure on Russia's shadow fleet; and support for the European Union's 22nd sanctions package.

Western leaders quickly expressed solidarity with Germany. French President Emmanuel Macron said, "These hybrid attacks are multiplying in Europe. They cannot go unanswered," adding: "Faced with this escalation, we must be united, determined and strengthen our support for Ukraine. France will continue to play its full part."

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated: "The security of our allies is the security of all of us. Attempts to intimidate us or drive a wedge between allies will not succeed: hybrid actions against any one of us are a matter that concerns all of us, and will be met with a united response."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that "attacking a Ukrainian cargo plane on German soil was Russia's outrageous attempt to weaken our resolve and our collective defense --- and it will fail. Our support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression is unwavering."

Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected Germany's response, calling it "another mistake, a serious one," and claiming it "clearly contradicts the interests of the German people." Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, quoted by the TASS news agency, dismissed the accusations as a "far-fetched and fabricated pretext" and promised an "appropriate response" from Moscow.
