Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi rebels erupted into violence overnight as the Iran-backed group launched a widespread assault on the kingdom's southern region. The attack targeted civilian and economic sites, including critical energy infrastructure, leaving at least 73 people wounded, among them women and children, according to the Saudi-led coalition.

The strikes hit multiple cities in southern Saudi Arabia near the Yemeni border: Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jizan, and Najran. General Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi coalition, characterized the offensive as a "dangerous escalation" and accused the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilian and economic infrastructure.

Jizan emerged as a primary target, where the Houthis struck energy facilities operated by Saudi Aramco, the state oil company. Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry confirmed that several energy installations in the south sustained damage, prompting emergency response teams and firefighters to rush to the sites as fires broke out at the facilities. Operations at some locations were temporarily suspended to allow crews to address the damage and extinguish the blazes.

The Aramco facilities in Jizan hold particular strategic significance. The company's refinery in the area has the capacity to process approximately 400,000 barrels of oil daily, and the region has previously been targeted by Houthi attacks.

Simultaneous attacks were reported in the Abha and Khamis Mushait areas, located near King Khalid Air Base and Abha's airport. Initial reports on social media and regional news outlets claimed that both the air base and airport were among the targets, though Saudi officials have not fully confirmed the precise details of every strike location.

The full scope of the assault is still being assessed. The Houthis have increasingly employed a combination of missiles and drones against Saudi targets in recent months, seeking to extend military pressure beyond Yemen's borders. Riyadh, for its part, accuses the group of intentionally striking civilians and national infrastructure.

The Saudi coalition spokesman announced that authorities would take "all necessary operational measures" to counter the threat and act against the sources of fire. The statement signals that Riyadh views the current attack not as an isolated incident but as a significant shift in the level of confrontation.

Beyond the immediate military developments, the assault carries added strategic weight in light of Saudi Arabia's new defense alliance. Just last month, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed a mutual defense agreement stipulating that an attack on any one of the three nations would be considered an attack on all. Known as the "Mecca Defense Alliance," the pact gives the current events broader regional implications—though as of now, there are no confirmed reports that Turkey or Pakistan have joined the military response to the Houthi strikes.
