Iran Executes Rapper, 21, for Protest Song

Erfan Mirzaei was arrested during demonstrations and sentenced to death under charges of "waging war against God"

Iran Executes 21-Year-Old Rapper for Protest Song

Iran's Islamic Republic executed Erfan Mirzaei, a 21-year-old rapper and singer from the Isfahan region, who had been detained during the country's recent wave of protests. According to reports from media outlets and human rights organizations, Mirzaei was put to death on Sunday, September 6, at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.

He was arrested following demonstrations that took place in January 2026. Security forces claimed they found a video on his phone documenting clashes between protesters and members of the Basij, a paramilitary volunteer militia under Iran's Revolutionary Guards. He was subsequently charged with "moharebeh", literally "waging war against God", a charge Iran's judicial system applies in certain cases against regime opponents.

His family attempted to prevent the execution and worked for months to save his life, according to reports. Relatives said they faced intense pressure not to publicize information about his arrest or sentence, and received no advance notice of the execution date.

Mirzaei's death comes amid a significant escalation in Iran's use of capital punishment. Since the outbreak of protest waves, authorities have employed security-related charges and vague provisions such as "waging war against God" and "corruption on earth" to prosecute demonstrators and regime critics. Human rights organizations have warned throughout this period of unfair trials, confessions allegedly extracted under torture, and inadequate access to legal defense.

Iran has for years been considered one of the world's leading executioners. The Islamic Republic has employed capital punishment since its establishment in 1979, and it remains a central tool of the Iranian judicial system. Recent years have seen a further intensification: according to the annual report by Iran Human Rights and ECPM (Together Against the Death Penalty), at least 1,639 people were executed in Iran in 2025, compared to 975 in 2024, a 68% increase and the highest number recorded since 1989. This represents an average of more than four executions per day.

The figures vary among monitoring organizations due to differences in documentation methods. Amnesty International, for instance, estimated that at least 2,159 executions were carried out in Iran in 2025, more than double the number reported for 2024.

2026 has continued under the shadow of mass executions. Recent reports indicate dozens of executions linked to protests and anti-regime activity, with human rights groups warning that the actual number of cases may be higher than verifiable figures.

For regime opponents in Iran, Mirzaei's execution sends another message: Singers, artists, and young people who express opposition to the government may face the death penalty.
