Israel Cracks Down on Dangerous Sukkah Construction

Land Enforcement Authority inspectors launched a proactive nationwide operation Wednesday to prevent the construction of illegal balconies, structures and building additions ahead of Sukkot. During the operation, inspectors toured neighborhoods where the phenomenon is widespread, posted informational notices and carried out additional measures to identify and prevent illegal construction work.

The operation is part of a nationwide effort by the Authority in advance of the holiday, aimed at preventing the erection of illegal building additions for the festival. As part of the initiative, the Authority warned suppliers, metalworkers and contractors who perform such work of their responsibility to prevent construction violations.

The Authority also held discussions with relevant local municipalities, which bear responsibility for preventing and enforcing against these violations.

The Authority emphasized that the operation is not focused on enforcement against temporary sukkot erected for the holiday, but rather on balconies, structures and building additions that require permits and could endanger those using them. The Authority's activities will continue around the clock in the coming days and nights, including during the holiday itself.

A statement from the Land Enforcement Authority said: "Erecting building additions without a permit ahead of Sukkot is not just a violation of the law, it can endanger human lives. Authority inspectors are working these days to prevent and stop illegal work before it becomes a fact on the ground and a genuine life-threatening danger. We will continue to act to prevent the danger and protect the public interest."
