Israel's Prison Service carried out a large-scale operation this week targeting individuals linked to organized crime networks, conducting simultaneous actions both inside detention facilities and against suspects under electronic monitoring in the community. The coordinated effort included raids on prisoners in facilities in the central and northern districts, alongside enforcement operations against six electronically monitored individuals identified with criminal organizations.

The operation deployed forces from the elite Metzada unit, prison special response teams, the Nachshon prisoner transport unit, intelligence divisions, and incarceration combat personnel. At the same time, the Maoz unit, part of the Prison Service's alternatives to incarceration and supervision division, conducted targeted enforcement against the monitored suspects associated with crime elements.

During searches at the detention facilities, authorities discovered and confiscated prohibited items and materials, including suspected narcotics, several improvised stabbing weapons, and unauthorized medication. All these items were transferred for further examination and processing according to standard protocols.

The operation unfolds against the backdrop of a broader governmental campaign against organized crime in Israel. Several months ago, during a Knesset National Security Committee hearing, Israel Police Deputy Commissioner Yigal Ben Shalom acknowledged that "the system in the country is not built to handle trials of organized crime groups." Ben Shalom also noted that "without technological tools, it is difficult to prevent criminal activity."

In recent weeks, police have conducted multiple operations against crime organizations, including a raid on a fortified compound in Nazareth used to direct criminal activity, resulting in eight arrests and the seizure of tens of thousands of shekels and counterfeit police equipment.
