Protesters Storm Light Rail Construction Site

A tense standoff erupted Sunday afternoon in Jerusalem's Bar Ilan corridor as dozens of protesters breached the security perimeter of the light rail construction site, physically occupying rail infrastructure and forcing a major police response to restore public order.

The demonstrators, protesting the advancement of infrastructure work through the heart of Haredi neighborhoods, managed to topple massive security fencing surrounding the construction zone and entered the sterile work area. Video footage from the scene captured protesters walking directly on rail tracks and sitting atop steel reinforcement bars embedded in the ground, while construction workers were forced to halt operations.

The breach occurred during midday hours as protesters arrived at the site with the stated intention of disrupting the light rail project's progress. According to sources familiar with the incident, some demonstrators positioned themselves on foundational infrastructure, creating a direct physical obstruction to ongoing construction activities.

The incident triggered a rapid deployment of reinforced police units from the Jerusalem District, supported by Border Police fighters and specialized patrol teams. Officers surrounded the construction site as the situation escalated, with protesters attempting to block major traffic arteries in the area.

A senior police officer present at the scene formally declared an illegal disturbance of the peace and ordered the demonstrators to evacuate immediately. This came after protesters succeeded in causing deliberate damage to engineering infrastructure and created a safety hazard by occupying active construction zones.

Background video from the scene captured the sound of prolonged honking from drivers and passersby expressing frustration over the blocked roadways. The disruption affected one of Jerusalem's central transportation corridors, impacting both private vehicles and public transit routes.

Following the dispersal order, police and Border Police forces began actively pushing protesters back beyond the construction site fencing and clearing blocked traffic lanes. Officers worked to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of area residents and commuters.

The Bar Ilan corridor has become a recurring flashpoint for demonstrations against the light rail project, which passes through predominantly Haredi neighborhoods. Previous protests in the area have resulted in service suspensions and the deployment of alternative bus routes to accommodate stranded passengers.

Police officials confirmed that forces would continue operating with determination against any attempts to damage public infrastructure or disrupt the daily routine of Jerusalem residents.
