A scheduled security briefing between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Yair Lapid was abruptly canceled Wednesday evening after confusion in the Prime Minister's Office. The meeting was set for Jerusalem, but Netanyahu asked to change the location. Lapid agreed and showed up at the new venue, Netanyahu didn't. After waiting, Lapid left.
On Thursday morning, during an interview on Israel Defense Forces Radio, Lapid said Netanyahu had called him personally to apologize. "The prime minister phoned me to say sorry, there was confusion on their end," he said.
Under standard protocol, the prime minister is supposed to brief the opposition leader once a month on sensitive security matters. It's meant to ensure continuity and national unity on critical issues. The briefing has been rescheduled for next week, with the postponement officially attributed to scheduling constraints.
The timing is sensitive. Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran are stalled, Israel and Lebanon are still negotiating Hezbollah's disarmament, and Netanyahu has been meeting with representatives of a peace council to advance an American-backed plan for Gaza.
