Russian Forces Deploy Sound-Activated Drones That Hide and Wait for Targets

Russian forces operating in Ukraine have introduced a significant tactical innovation in drone warfare: unmanned aerial vehicles that lie in wait, listening for targets before striking. These so-called "lurker drones" are equipped with sensitive microphones that allow them to detect approaching vehicles and launch surprise attacks.

According to reports from Ukrainian military experts, including technology advisor Sergey "Flash" Beskrestnov, the drones fly deep into territory, land in concealed positions such as yards, behind gates, or among bushes, and enter a silent standby mode. When the microphone picks up engine noise from an approaching vehicle, the remote operator activates the drone, which then takes off for a rapid strike—often from behind or from the side of the target.

Published footage demonstrates this exact scenario: a drone lies motionless in a yard behind an old wooden gate among tall grass, then suddenly takes flight toward a road and approaches a vehicle bearing Ukrainian markings while executing an attack. This tactic makes movement along supply and reinforcement routes even more dangerous, as visual scanning alone is no longer sufficient to detect threats.

The platform commonly used in this new tactic is the fiber-optic "Knyaz Vandal Novgorodsky" (KVN) drone. New versions of this system reportedly reach ranges of approximately 30 kilometers, with reports of even longer-range variants. The fiber-optic link makes the drone resistant to electronic warfare, and the addition of acoustic sensors solves a problem that plagued earlier "waiting drones" (known as Zhdun)—those models sat directly on roads and were easily spotted by reconnaissance drones.

The audio sensor significantly complicates early detection and clearance from the air, as drivers may not notice the drone until the last moment. Both sides in the conflict have been using ambush drones for some time, but the combination of sensitive microphones with fiber-optic links represents a substantial upgrade in strike capabilities.

Reports of this new method emerged in mid-August 2025, joining a broader trend of improvements in Russian drone capabilities. Russia has been employing advanced weaponry that enables precise strikes from great distances, making slow-moving targets particularly vulnerable.

The drone warfare arms race continues to evolve rapidly, and the battlefield is becoming increasingly lethal for anyone moving along roads. This new technology illustrates the ongoing competition between offensive capabilities and defensive measures, with each side seeking innovative solutions to counter evolving threats.
