Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, whose government recognised a Palestinian state, imposed an arms embargo on Israel, and recently summoned Israel's chargé d'affaires over a minister's call for Palestinian statehood "from the river to the sea", announced Monday he is dissolving parliament and calling snap elections for November 29, according to the BBC.
The move follows Friday's parliamentary defeat of Sánchez's housing measures aimed at protecting tenants, confirming his left-wing coalition no longer commands a majority. Opposition leader Alberto Feijóo of the conservative People's Party declared Monday that "finally Spain can say what it thinks, and choose what kind of country it wants to be," welcoming what he termed the fall of the left-wing government. Polls show Sánchez's Socialists trailing the PP, making the housing crisis, identified as Spaniards' top concern, his primary campaign issue as he seeks to mobilise left-wing voters and retain power.
