Unprecedented Declaration

Trump Claims Hormuz Strait as U.S. Territory

The American president shared a dramatic social media post depicting the strategic waterway as U.S. territory, raising legal and diplomatic questions as tensions with Iran continue

Trump Posts Graphic Declaring Strait of Hormuz U.S. Territory

President Donald Trump shared a striking social media post on Tuesday declaring the Strait of Hormuz to be American territory. The post featured a graphic image of the strait labeled "New United States Territory," a move that raises significant legal and diplomatic questions.

The declaration comes amid ongoing tensions with Iran and American efforts to control the strategic shipping lane through which approximately 20 percent of the world's oil flows. While Trump has previously claimed the United States maintains "absolute control" over the strait, this latest statement represents a notable escalation in both language and policy positioning.

That being said, this is not the first time Trump has made this threat. During a speech at a police academy in Long Island, New York, last Friday, the president indicated he would soon designate the shipping route as American territory. "After we finish defeating Iran, which is being defeated badly, pretty soon I will declare the Strait of Hormuz as territory of the United States," he stated at the time.

The situation on the ground tells a more complex story than the president's declarations suggest. According to recent data, only 14 vessels crossed the strait last Tuesday, compared to approximately 120 ships that typically passed through daily before the outbreak of hostilities. The unstable security environment and fear of Iranian attacks continue to deter commercial shipping companies from using the vital passage.

Trump's move also raises complex legal questions. The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway, and a unilateral declaration of sovereignty over it contradicts international law. The passage is critical to global commerce, and formal American control could provoke widespread international opposition.

Whether Trump's statement is serious, and whether it signals a new policy position for the administration, remains unclear. However, the graphic social media post suggests an intention to send a clear message, both to Iran and to the world, that the United States views itself as controlling the strategic waterway.

Nearly six months into the conflict with Iran, there are few indications that diplomatic contacts will lead to peace soon. The United States is imposing a blockade on Iranian shipping and ports to apply economic pressure on Tehran, but the ecological and economic costs of the crisis continue to mount.
