Security Barrier Breach Attempt Near Jerusalem Foiled

Israeli Border Police forces stopped an unusual breach attempt at the security barrier north of Jerusalem over the weekend, arresting two suspects caught excavating at the base of the structure with power tools.

The incident occurred during a routine patrol by Border Police units operating in the Jerusalem envelope area, specifically along the seam line near Kafr Aqab, a Palestinian neighborhood. Officers spotted the two individuals working at the foundation of the separation barrier, using electric excavation equipment in what appeared to be a deliberate effort to create a passage from Judea and Samaria into Israeli territory.

According to a police spokesperson, the suspects had brought sophisticated digging tools to the site, suggesting advance planning for the operation.

When Border Police identified the activity, they entered the Kafr Aqab area and surprised the two men in the act. Realizing they had been discovered, the suspects attempted to flee on foot. Officers pursued them in a brief chase that ended when both men were located hiding inside a nearby residential building.

Authorities confiscated the equipment used in the digging operation, including a large drill and long electrical cables that had been brought specifically for creating the breach. The seized items, police said, indicate premeditation and a clear intention to penetrate the security barrier.

Both suspects, residents of Kafr Aqab, were taken into custody and transferred to the Border Police investigation unit for the Jerusalem envelope for further questioning. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the incident, the purpose behind the excavation, and whether this represents an isolated attempt or part of broader activity.

The episode adds to a series of infiltration attempts and security operations along the Jerusalem envelope. Just days earlier, Border Police foiled a tunnel-digging attempt near the separation fence at Qalandiya, arresting a 36-year-old suspect who allegedly told interrogators he had planned to dig a tunnel for crossing into Israeli territory.

A recent State Comptroller's report revealed that only 61 percent of the seam line around Jerusalem is covered by a physical barrier, leaving 39 percent without any obstacle. The report noted that in the first quarter of 2023 alone, police documented over 2,400 Palestinians apprehended while attempting to cross illegally, highlighting the scale of infiltration attempts in the sector.

Police officials emphasized that Border Police forces continue intensive operational activity along the seam line, employing operational and intelligence capabilities to prevent infiltrations and maintain security in the area.
