The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday night that the American vice president reached out to Rezaei in a letter aimed at exploring the possibility of resuming negotiations. According to American sources quoted in the report, the letter was sent on Trump's instructions and with his full knowledge, to test whether understandings could be reached that would prevent another round of fighting between the US and Iran.
Rezaei is considered a central figure in the hardline camp within the Iranian regime and one of the close associates of Mojtaba Khamenei. The American administration believes that direct communication with him could help advance agreements, precisely because of his standing and influence among the leadership in Tehran. According to the report, the contacts that followed the letter have not yet dealt with a detailed ceasefire proposal, but rather with the possibility of resuming talks between the sides.
Still, the path to agreements remains distant. Last week, Rezaei emphasized that Iran is not prepared to conduct negotiations with the United States until its central demands are not met.
