Boots on the Ground: Trump Eyes Arming Iranian Militias to Topple the Regime

President Trump is exploring a major expansion of the war by providing arms, training, and intelligence to Kurdish and local Iranian militias to overthrow the regime from within.

As the aerial campaign against the Iranian regime enters its fourth day, President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a dramatic shift in strategy that would involve arming and training domestic militias to overthrow the government in Tehran. Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicate that the President is prepared in principle to support armed Iranian groups, essentially transforming them into pro-Western ground forces backed by Washington’s immense military resources. This move would represent a significant escalation of American involvement, moving beyond precision air strikes and into the realm of active regime change. By leveraging the current military weakness of the Iranian leadership, Trump aims to empower local actors, particularly Kurdish leaders, to seize territory and dismantle the remaining structures of the Islamic Republic from the inside out.

Engaging Local and Kurdish Leadership

The President has already begun the process of identifying potential partners for this ground-level offensive. On Sunday, Trump reportedly held high-level discussions with Kurdish leaders who maintain significant military influence along the border between Iraq and Iran. These groups have long sought greater autonomy and are seen as the most organized and capable forces to challenge the regime’s provincial control. Israeli air strikes have recently targeted military positions in western Iran, a move that many analysts believe was intended to clear a path for Kurdish advances. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the President is in constant contact with various regional partners, though she stopped short of detailing specific military objectives.

The Trump Doctrine: The People as the Ground Force

The President’s strategy appears to be rooted in a philosophy that avoids a full-scale American invasion while still achieving total victory. Trump has twice shared a column detailing the "Trump Doctrine," which argues that a massive American ground force is unnecessary because the Iranian people themselves are the "forces on the ground." By providing these groups with weapons, training, and intelligence, the United States can facilitate a domestic uprising that is both organic and lethal. When the war began last Saturday, Trump explicitly called on the Iranian people to "take over your government," promising that "America backs you with crushing and destructive power." Supporting armed militias is the next logical step in fulfilling that promise.

Decision Time in Washington

While the principle of supporting rebels has been established, senior American officials clarify that a final decision on the level of support has not been reached. The administration is currently debating whether to provide direct shipments of advanced weaponry, establish training camps in neighboring countries, or limit support to covert intelligence sharing. The challenge remains the varying goals of the different opposition groups, yet the White House remains focused on the central objective: the total destabilization of the regime. With the Iranian military already reeling from air strikes, the introduction of a well-equipped domestic resistance could be the final blow that forces a pro-Western takeover.
