Following the high-profile assassination of Ali Khamenei during Operation Lion’s Roar, the Iranian regime has reportedly moved with lightning speed to secure its political future by appointing his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the next Supreme Leader. According to reports from the opposition outlet Iran International, the 88-member Assembly of Experts met in a highly secretive, non-physical session to finalize the succession under intense pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). While official confirmation from Tehran is still pending, the move signals a desperate attempt by the military elite to maintain a sense of continuity and cohesion as the country reels from devastating Israeli and American air strikes. Despite rumors that Mojtaba had been killed alongside his father, Iranian state media agencies like Mehr have insisted he remains healthy and unharmed, ready to take the mantle of the Islamic Republic.

The Guard’s Power Play

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei is widely viewed as a tactical victory for the IRGC. For years, regional experts predicted that the regime would avoid a hereditary succession to prevent public backlash, but the current state of war has changed the calculus. By placing the son of the former leader in power, the Revolutionary Guard secures a familiar face for the public while ensuring they maintain actual control over the state’s decision-making process. The Assembly of Experts reportedly conducted the vote in a secure, digital environment after their physical headquarters in Qom was obliterated by the Israeli Air Force earlier today. Fars News Agency, which is closely linked to the IRGC, confirmed that the selection process was "very fast," focusing on a leader who can "stand against the arrogance of world powers."

A Legacy of Suppression

Mojtaba Khamenei is not a stranger to the inner workings of the regime’s security apparatus. Born in Mashhad and a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, he has long been accused by the United States and international human rights groups of collaborating with the Basij militia to brutally crush domestic protests. His deep ties to the IRGC make him a "comfortable" choice for the military, who likely believe that a less experienced or more moderate cleric would be unable to hold the country together during the current war. The "measures for future leadership" reportedly left behind by his father emphasized courage and management ability, qualities the regime now claims Mojtaba possesses in abundance.

Vows of Vengeance

The transition comes amid a backdrop of extreme regional instability and internal unrest. While some residents of Tehran reportedly celebrated the death of the elder Khamenei, the regime's loyalists have responded with vows of total destruction against the West. Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, warned that the "liquidation of leaders will not undermine the stability" of the country. He promised a "strong response against the United States and Israel," stating that "we will burn the heart of America and Israel just as our hearts were burned for the leader." As the military remains on full alert, the official announcement of Mojtaba’s new role is expected within the coming hours or days, an act intended to force national unity through the bloodline of the fallen leader.
