A tragic case of suspected fatal child abuse has shaken the city of Dimona after a weeks-old infant died early Friday morning at Soroka Medical Center. Police have launched an intensive investigation into the circumstances of the death, suspecting intentional harm.
The infant was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, suffering from what medical staff described as "severe trauma." Despite intensive efforts by the medical team to stabilize him, the baby was pronounced dead in the early hours of Friday.
During a comprehensive medical examination, doctors discovered multiple severe fractures and bruises across the infant's body. The nature of the injuries immediately raised red flags, leading hospital authorities to report a high suspicion of non-natural, intentional violence.
Following the report, investigators from the Dimona station (Negev District) moved quickly to detain the parents: The baby's father was arrested yesterday. By court order, his detention was extended, and he has been sent for a psychiatric evaluation. The baby's mother was arrested this morning (Friday) and taken in for questioning as police attempt to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy.
The infant's body has been transferred to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute for an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death.
