President Herzog Slams Zohran Mamdani during New York speech
Speaking at Yeshiva University, Herzog says Mamdani “makes no attempt to hide his hostility toward Israel, the only state of the Jewish people."

Israeli President Isaac Herzog sharply criticized New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Sunday night, warning that his past statements opposing aliyah and rejecting Zionism should be viewed as a “red flag” for Jewish communities in the United States and around the world. Herzog delivered the remarks in Manhattan during a ceremony at Yeshiva University, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate.
In his speech, Herzog said Mamdani “makes no attempt to hide his hostility toward Israel, the only state of the Jewish people,” citing public comments in which the incoming mayor spoke against Jewish immigration to Israel and dismissed Zionism as a national movement. Herzog called the remarks “scandalous” and argued that their political normalization in New York, home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel, carries significant consequences.
“The results of the election in New York should raise a red flag,” Herzog said, urging Jewish communities and Israel’s supporters to confront what he described as escalating defamation and open hostility. He called for a firm and unhesitating response, saying that the Jewish people must use every legal and public tool at their disposal to counter such rhetoric. “The Jewish people have been through hell, and yet we are here, and we will overcome,” he added.
Herzog’s comments reflect growing concern in Israel about Mamdani, who is set to govern a city that plays a central role in Israel–diaspora relations. His criticism also comes amid broader tensions between pro-Israel organizations and American progressive politicians who have adopted increasingly confrontational stances toward Israeli policy.
During the same address, Herzog also praised US President Donald Trump for his initiative to end the war in Gaza. He thanked Trump for what he described as steadfast leadership and support for Israel, saying he hopes the administration succeeds in advancing “a new horizon in the Middle East.”
Herzog's speech was one of his most direct comments on US politics yet, pointing to Israel's concerns as Mamdani is about to take office in a city that's a major hub for Jewish communities around the world.
