Yemen's hidden threat

While Israel Looks Elsewhere, a Sleeper Front Is Upgrading Its Arsenal

Intelligence sources reveal the Iranian proxy is conducting secret missile tests to boost accuracy, sparking a severe assassination warning from Israel.

Houthis

While Israeli security services remain heavily focused on threats from Iran and Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthi rebels are quietly exploiting the lull to upgrade their ballistic missile capabilities, conducting a series of recent tests aimed at enhancing both their precision and operational range.

According to a report by i24NEWS citing two Western intelligence sources, the Yemeni militant group has embarked on a concerted effort to refine its rocketry program. The intelligence assessment indicates that the recent testing cycle is designed to overcome technical limitations that have plagued previous Houthi launches. Over the past two and a half years, the group has fired numerous missiles toward Israel, several of which suffered mid-flight structural failures and broke apart before reaching their targets.

A Quiet Front in the Shadow of Gaza

Despite their aggressive rhetoric and status as a key proxy in Iran’s regional alliance, the Houthis have maintained a comparatively low volume of direct fire toward Israel over the last year. Following a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip in October 2025, the group largely halted its long-range strikes.

When the Houthis resumed periodic launches on March 28, the operations remained limited. Since that resumption, authorities have recorded only about six missile launches and five drone attacks directed at Israeli territory.

However, Western intelligence indicates that this relative restraint on the battlefield has been utilized behind the scenes to methodically rectify engineering flaws in their arsenal.

Warning of Escalation

The intelligence warnings coincide with renewed threats from the leadership in Sana'a. Last week, Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi declared that his forces are prepared to intervene militarily on behalf of Hamas should the Israel Defense Forces launch any renewed large-scale operations in the Gaza Strip.

"We are in continuous coordination with our brothers in the theaters of resistance," al-Houthi said in a public address. "We will not hesitate to fulfill our duty in the event of any new escalation of aggression against any front, first and foremost in Gaza."

The rising technical profile of the Houthi missile threat has not gone unnoticed in Jerusalem. Days before the intelligence assessments surfaced, Israel’s defense minister issued a stark public warning directly targeting the group’s command structure, emphasizing that the Houthi leadership does not enjoy immunity.

"Israel’s account with the Houthis remains open—they will pay a price," the defense minister stated. "If their leader enters our crosshairs, we will eliminate him."
