The IDF has provided a rare glimpse into the highly specialized work of the 869 Collection Unit, currently operating under the 91st Division in Southern Lebanon. As part of the ongoing "Lion’s Roar" operation, this unit is responsible for gathering front line intelligence and directing precision fire against Hezbollah targets. New footage released by the military shows the unit's ability to identify and track terrorists in real time, even in the dense and mountainous terrain of the south. Since the start of the war, the unit has been credited with locating dozens of operatives and coordinating the destruction of a significant amount of terror infrastructure.

The Hunt in Bint Jbeil

One specific incident highlighted in the report took place in the area of Bint Jbeil, a known Hezbollah stronghold. Soldiers from Unit 869 identified two armed terrorists moving through the ruins of a building. The unit maintained constant visual contact, tracking the pair as they attempted to maneuver into a firing position. Working in seamless coordination with the Air Force, the unit provided the exact coordinates, leading to a precision strike that eliminated both terrorists before they could carry out an attack. "The fighters of the unit located dozens of Hezbollah terrorists and destroyed terrorist infrastructure," the IDF stated, emphasizing the unit's role as the "eyes" of the ground forces.

Intelligence Led Warfare

The success of the "Lion’s Roar" operation is heavily dependent on the type of granular intelligence provided by units like 869. By using advanced surveillance technology and tactical drones, the unit is able to map out Hezbollah's tunnel entrances, weapon caches, and observation posts. This allows the IDF to dismantle the organization’s defenses methodically. The military noted that the unit's work not only facilitates the elimination of enemy combatants but also significantly reduces the risk to Israeli ground troops by clearing out threats before they can engage in close quarters combat.
