Amid heightened regional security tensions, retired Major General Yaakov Amidror, a former Israeli national security advisor, offered a nuanced assessment of potential escalation with Iran during an interview on an Israeli current affairs program hosted by Sharon Gal.
Amidror outlined why, from a purely strategic perspective, Iran has little incentive to initiate hostilities. "Theoretically, the Iranians have no interest in opening fire," he explained. He noted that the United States opposes war in the region, and that Iran has no viable means to break the current blockade it faces. Even if Tehran were to launch an attack, he said, the blockade would remain in place. While Iran could strike neighboring countries and might attempt to draw Israel into the conflict, Amidror argued that involving Israel would actually harm Iranian interests.
The retired general emphasized that Iranian leadership understands the consequences of direct confrontation with Israel. "They haven't been careful recently for nothing, they understand that Israel would respond with great force," he said.
