High-ranking Israeli officials offered diverging assessments of the northern front on Thursday, signaling a precarious "interim" phase in the conflict. While some indicators suggest a crippled Hezbollah is seeking an exit, other leaders warn that the military campaign may be far from over.

‘Interim Summary’: A warning on Renewed Combat possibility

Knesset Member Boaz Bismut, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, issued a sobering update following a classified security briefing. Taking to the social media platform X, Bismut suggested that the current lull in intensity might be short-lived.

"There is a possibility that the campaign against Iran will resume in the coming days," Bismut wrote. "We are currently only at an interim summary."

His comments imply that despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the Israeli defense establishment remains on high alert for a breakdown in negotiations or a sudden shift in tactical conditions on the ground.

In contrast to the warnings of escalation, Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the severe degradation of Hezbollah’s capabilities. According to Katz, the Lebanese militant group is "desperate" for a ceasefire following the massive IDF offensive dubbed "Operation Eternal Darkness."

Katz revealed that more than 200 terrorists were killed in that single wave of strikes, bringing the total number of Hezbollah casualties in the current campaign to approximately 1,400.

"Hezbollah is stunned by the scale of the blow it has received," Katz stated, framing the group’s interest in a truce as a result of military exhaustion rather than a strategic choice.

Katz issued a clear warning regarding Iranian intervention, asserting that the IDF is prepared to act "with immense force" should Tehran resume direct fire toward Israeli territory. This comes as Israel maintains its policy of proactive strikes to prevent Hezbollah from regrouping along the border.

The Looming Question

As conflicting reports of diplomatic breakthroughs and imminent escalation collide, the ultimate direction of the conflict remains uncertain. Israel now faces a pivotal crossroads: is the leadership preparing for the collapse of ceasefire talks and a major regional escalation, or has the IDF successfully forced Hezbollah into a terminal retreat?
