In a move that could fundamentally reshape the northern front, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that he has instructed the security cabinet to begin direct negotiations with the Lebanese government as soon as possible. These high level talks, which are expected to take place in Washington D.C. next week, will focus specifically on the total demilitarization of Hezbollah and the formal regulation of peace between Israel and Lebanon. While the war in the north continues, the Prime Minister indicated that Israel is ready to explore a diplomatic path, leading to a surge in the value of the Israeli Shekel to a 30 year high against the dollar as markets reacted to the potential for regional stability.

Negotiations in the Shadow of War

The diplomatic initiative comes amid intense international pressure and specific requests from the White House. Reports indicate that President Donald Trump personally asked Netanyahu during a phone call on Wednesday to scale back air strikes in Lebanon to ensure the success of broader negotiations with Iran. While the Trump administration and Israel have both clarified that Lebanon is not officially part of the recent ceasefire agreement with Tehran, Israel has agreed to act as a "helping partner" in the process. Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yehiel Leiter is set to lead the delegation, meeting directly with representatives of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Despite the move toward the negotiating table, Israeli officials have been clear that the talks will take place "under fire." A senior security official emphasized that the Lebanese government must prove it can succeed where it has failed for decades, particularly in enforcing the disarmament of terrorist groups. The IDF has simultaneously launched a wide scale operation titled "Eternal Darkness," targeting Hezbollah's command centers across Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon. Netanyahu also expressed appreciation for the Lebanese Prime Minister’s call to demilitarize Beirut, though Israeli skepticism remains high regarding the Lebanese army's ability to confront the Shiite terrorist organization effectively without continued military pressure.
