Israeli Prison Conditions: Debate Over Detainee Treatment

Before-and-after photographs of Nadim Abu al-Rub, released on social media yesterday, have ignited intense discussion about conditions in Israeli security prisons. Abu al-Rub, a resident of Tulkarm who spent the past two years in administrative detention—a form of imprisonment without trial used by Israel for security suspects—returned home weighing approximately half his original body weight.

The images, distributed by Quds News Network, show the gaunt former detainee reuniting with his father. Abu al-Rub had been held under an administrative detention order that was renewed for an additional six months as recently as last February. The dramatic transformation has generated both outrage and sardonic commentary on Arabic-language social media, with users creating the hashtag #AbuFit.

The physical change reflects a deliberate policy shift. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who oversees Israel's prison service, announced in January 2023 his intention to end what he called the "summer camp" conditions for security prisoners. Following the October 7 attacks, this policy intensified. Ben-Gvir ordered significant reductions in prisoner privileges and established stricter nutritional standards that he has stated meet only the minimum legal requirements. The minister has been explicit about his approach, saying he intends to provide only the most basic caloric intake necessary.

The result, as evidenced by Abu al-Rub's appearance upon release, represents what critics describe as a new reality in Israeli security prisons—one in which detainees emerge dramatically thinner than when they entered. Ben-Gvir's supporters view this as fulfilling his promise to toughen conditions, while critics have dubbed it an extreme weight-loss regimen masquerading as security policy.
