2026 Update

Lag Baomer at Meron This Year- Everything You Need to Know

With only three central lightings approved for 200 participants each, the plan shifts to managing the 20,000 pilgrims already on-site while enforcing a "zero tolerance" policy for any new arrivals.

Following the dramatic police cancellation of the mass Lag BaOmer celebrations, a new "minimalist framework" has been drafted to preserve the centuries-old tradition at the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai (Rashbi).

The plan acknowledges the reality that thousands of people, estimated at roughly 20,000, spent thhis past Shabbat in Meron legally, as the area had not yet been declared a closed military zone. The strategy shifts from a public event to a highly controlled management of those already on-site.

Three Fires, 600 Guests

To maintain the continuity of the Hilula (celebration), the draft proposes only three central lighting ceremonies, scheduled for Monday night:

Each ceremony will be strictly capped at 200 participants, with invitations managed internally by the respective communities. These communities have been asked to ensure their small delegations represent the wide spectrum of groups that traditionally hold lightings at the mountain.

Operational Details

To accommodate those already in the village, seven specific compounds will be managed, including the Cave of the Rashbi, the Bnei Akiva compound, and the Or HaRashbi area. The traditional Lag BaOmer orchestra will perform in the courtyard of the tomb, with ushers managing the flow of prayer to ensure safety.

For the hundreds of thousands unable to attend, the ceremonies and prayers will be broadcast via global live stream.

"Zero Tolerance" for New Arrivals

The Ministry of Jerusalem and Jewish Tradition emphasized that this plan does not permit any new arrivals.

The entire framework remains contingent on the approval of the Home Front Command and Israel Police. Officials noted that the restrictions were coordinated with the Prime Minister's Office due to the direct threat of Hezbollah rocket fire targeting the mountain.

While organizers are pleading with the public to follow instructions, tensions remain high as hardline groups have already signaled their intent to defy the lockdowns.
