The military has cleared for publication that twenty-seven-year-old Major Itamar Sapir has been killed during an intense firefight against terrorists operating within the Western Sector of southern Lebanon. Sapir, a highly respected resident of Ariel and an electrical engineering student, was serving as an elite deputy company commander within the 7008th Battalion of the 551st Paratroopers Brigade.
His sudden death brings the total number of local security personnel killed since the official commencement of the nominal regional ceasefire to ten individuals.
The fatal engagement began at approximately 9:45 in the morning near the rural community of Quzah. Sapir was leading his men through a routine clearing operation outside a prominent local church compound when a concealed terrorist suddenly opened fire from within the perimeter of the religious structure.
