Police from Israel's Northern District arrived last night (Monday) to search a house in the town of Tuba Zangaria after suspicion arose that a monkey was being kept there illegally.

When the police arrived at the scene, the monkey was found in a toilet cubicle in a house that was in poor condition, tied to a leash and in difficult conditions.

Inspectors from the Nature and Parks Authority were called to the scene for further treatment and safe capture of the monkey.

The Authority notes that since March, this is the 39th green garden monkey caught in Israel.

A joint statement said: "The Israel Police and the Nature and Parks Authority remind us that the possession of protected natural values such as privately raised monkeys is prohibited and constitutes a serious offense due to the significant harm to the sensitive animal due to complex breeding needs, and in particular social needs that a person cannot provide."
