Today, a significant plea agreement was unveiled in the abuse case at the "Garden of Horrors" in Eilat. Under the terms of the settlement, kindergarten teacher Ilana Kovar admitted guilty to more than 360 counts of assault and 26 counts of child abuse. Disturbingly, these acts were committed against infants and toddlers not during routine care but as deliberate attacks.
This case was first brought to light on May 12, 2023, shacking the Israeli public with its horrible details, and shortly thereafter, Kovar was arrested following the revelation of incriminating footage captured by security cameras. These images represented just a fraction of the numerous incidents detailed in the indictment and he abuse that multiple children and babies suffered on a regular basis.
The settlement reached between the parties does not specify sentencing agreements but involves an amended indictment outlining Kovar's actions. According to the indictment, Kovar operated a kindergarten attended by 26 toddlers, aged between 9 months and 3.5 years. Shockingly, she subjected 23 of these children to physical and psychological abuse in 360 separate instances. Throughout this period, all the kindergarten children were exposed to continuous violence inflicted upon their peers.
Details further revealed that Kovar frequently employed violence against the toddlers, attacking them in various ways. Disturbingly, some of these assaults targeted babies and toddlers who were quietly engaged in their own activities, rather than during caregiving moments.
The indictment also detailed instances where Kovar pinched, hit, kicked, and forcefully moved the toddlers, even slamming them onto mattresses while they slept. Be'er Sheva District Court Judge Alon Gavizon subsequently convicted Kovar on hundreds of counts of assaulting minors and 26 counts of child abuse.
Photographic evidence depicted Kovar, previously regarded as a respected educator in Eilat, engaging in acts such as hair-pulling, pushing, and violently striking children's heads against surfaces. Yordan, the father of a child attending the kindergarten, expressed profound distress over discovering the abuse, describing the immense impact on their lives. He conveyed feelings of guilt for not recognizing signs earlier and highlighted his son's ongoing psychological trauma, which has necessitated therapeutic intervention.
In response to the settlement, attorneys Yaron Ben Yosef and Raz Almozanino emphasized solidarity with affected families and the need for justice. They underscored the unprecedented nature of the charges and called for a punishment that reflects the severity of Kovar's actions, with hopes that it will serve as a deterrent against future abuse of vulnerable children.
