MK Gafni Intervenes to Save Eight Haredi Schools from Immediate Closure
A dramatic political rescue delays the shutdown of eight Chinuch Atzmai Torah schools (Talmudei Torah) by at least one year, bringing massive relief to hundreds of teachers and families following intense core-curriculum disputes.
A dramatic breakthrough emerged for the ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) elementary school system Monday evening. Following marathon negotiations led by Degel HaTorah Chairman MK Moshe Gafni, Education Minister Yoav Kisch, and the direct involvement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, an agreement was reached granting a one-year reprieve to eight Talmudei Torah (boys' Torah schools) that were facing immediate closure.
The temporary resolution provides immense relief to hundreds of families and educators who had been facing severe uncertainty, giving the administration of the Chinuch Atzmai (Independent Education) network and individual school principals critical time to address the regulatory demands of the Ministry of Education.
Core-Curriculum Disputes Drive Closure Threats
Just last week, the looming crisis captured headlines as several well-known institutions across the country, including prominent schools in Bnei Brak such as the 'Zichron Meir' Talmud Torah, faced an actual threat of being shut down.
The crisis unfolded behind the scenes against the backdrop of a petition filed to the High Court of Justice by the Hiddush organization against Chinuch Atzmai, alleging severe irregularities in school hour allocations and a complete failure to meet mandated core-curriculum (Liba) studies.
While government systems previously operated on a sliding-scale model, where funding depth matched the depth of regulatory compliance, state ministries and judicial courts have recently instituted rigid threshold requirements that leave no room for flexibility. Chief among these is strict compliance with the licensing conditions of the Ministry of Education, conditions that the boys' Torah schools allegedly do not meet.
Collective Hearing Notices Shock the Community
The urgency peaked recently when school principals received a dramatic directive from Rabbi Eliezer (Azi) Sorotzkin, the Director-General of the Chinuch Atzmai network, instructing them to prepare for a collective hearing process for all educational staff, teachers, and instructors.
Although network officials framed the move as a technical necessity driven by regulatory constraints, the notice left hundreds of families in despair, sparking intense fears of mass layoffs and the complete displacement of thousands of young students.
Under the newly secured arrangement, the schools have been thrown a critical lifeline. The one-year postponement gives administrators and Chinuch Atzmai leadership the breathing room needed to thoroughly evaluate the state's regulatory demands and formulate solutions to keep the institutions running without compromising their traditional character.
A Year to Find Long-Term Solutions
The removal of the immediate threat ensures that the upcoming school year will open as scheduled. Figures within the Torah community have expressed deep appreciation for MK Gafni's intensive efforts and the direct intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office in securing the delay.
However, during the coming year, the Chinuch Atzmai network will be required to find a long-term path forward that satisfies state criteria while maintaining the schools' distinct educational identity.
