The Prime Minister's Office released footage showing the immediate aftermath of Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to share what was presented as his personal phone number with Israeli citizens and the wider public.
In documentation published by Topaz Luk, an aide to the prime minister, hundreds of WhatsApp messages can be seen arriving in rapid succession on Netanyahu's phone, flooding the device just seconds after the number was made public.
A statement from Netanyahu's office acknowledged that the overwhelming volume of incoming messages caused the WhatsApp service to malfunction. The office said technical teams were working to resolve the issue.
"Due to the overload of calls to the prime minister's number - WhatsApp has been blocked >> Working to restore service as soon as possible. Available on Telegram," the statement read.
