Saudi Arabia has announced it is opening an investigation into the attempted hijacking of FlyDubai flight 1274 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which unfolded over Saudi airspace last week. According to reports from the kingdom, while the UAE is conducting a criminal investigation into the actions of the co-pilot who attempted the hijacking, Saudi authorities will examine a range of technical details and may also review their approval of Israeli overflights.
Saudi sources say the investigation will scrutinize all the procedures that allowed the attempted attack to take place in Saudi skies. It is unclear whether the review will be used by the Saudis to reverse their pre-war decision to open their airspace to civilian flights to and from Israel.
Israeli sources said there was an attempt to cooperate with the Saudis, but it was rejected outright. A source in Israel's aviation investigation sector said: "Israel would have joined the Saudi safety investigation but was never invited."
