Media Controversy

Haaretz Writer Slams Sara Netanyahu

Nir Gontarz criticized the prime minister's wife for her comments about former general Yair Golan, warning the public may believe her claims due to her position

Haaretz journalist Nir Gontarz sharply criticized Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a Tuesday morning interview on 103 FM radio. His comments came in response to statements she made about Yair Golan, a former Israel Defense Forces general and current opposition politician. Gontarz, who revealed that Golan helped rescue his son during the October 7 Hamas attacks, described her remarks as slanderous and called on Golan to pursue legal action.

"I always had some measure of compassion for her, I saw the segment in question, and this is an act of villainy. She's a real scoundrel. Forgive me," Gontarz said.

The journalist then addressed the significance of such statements coming from the prime minister's spouse, expressing concern that portions of the public might consider them credible because of her position.

"Even if she's mentally unstable, when you slander, what are you doing? What are you doing? The public thinks to themselves that as the wife of the prime minister she surely knows what she's talking about, she's in contact with security officials, hears her husband's conversations, and therefore it carries extra weight," he said.

Gontarz warned about the potential impact of her statements on public opinion: "The public may believe her words."

He then urged Golan to respond to Netanyahu's comments through legal channels. While Gontarz clarified that he generally opposes defamation lawsuits by journalists and politicians, he argued this case warranted action.

"I'm generally against defamation suits by journalists and politicians. I think Yair Golan needs to sue this woman. He needs to go all the way with this," he said.
